If you could Teach the World One Thing, what would it be?
What can you not stop talking about? What do you know from your experiences, your education, etc.? You don’t have to be an expert, I promise. You just need to be passionate and willing to learn as you grow.
It’s important to choose something you love, in an area where you can help your target audience solve a problem. Maybe you have a success story and want to teach others in your niche how to achieve the same results.
Having troubles narrowing it down? Get on Pinterest- it’s full of inspirational, beautiful content. Search some of the things you are interested in and see what comes up. Or, think about your hobbies as a child. Was there something that you loved to do, but never found the time to continue?
Don’t worry about how you can make money at it yet- thanks to technology you can figure out and monetize just about anything!
The Benefits of just Starting out
When your business is new and in the start-up phase you may find yourself wishing to be like the bigger, more established companies. How could I ever compete when there are so many others who have started out before me? It definitely can feel intimidating and demotivating at first- even to the extent where it prevents you from continuing! Let’s change that perspective – there are some amazing benefits when you are just starting out:
- You can ‘map out’ the market and decide where you want to land. Research what other people are doing in your industry and position yourself accordingly in a place that works for you!
- You can engage with your audience a lot better. When you’re just beginning really get to know your audience- you have the time and capacity. Reply to comments, dm’s, email. Ask them questions too, it’s a two way street!
- You have the opportunity to experiment and make mistakes! At the beginning of your entrepreneurial journey you won’t fall as hard if you make a misstep.
Finding your Niche
When you try to be ‘everything to everybody’ your voice gets watered down and you can’t connect as deeply with your ideal audience. You want to please everyone and offend no-one. But, what ends up happening is you become ‘a jack of all trades, and a master of none’.
Be Yourself & Build Authority
Don’t be afraid to be yourself because you’re scared of isolating people- these aren’t your people, so who cares (I know this can be hard)! You need to be authentic, it builds authority. Imagine creating a business that is successful just by being your authentic self! That’s the dream, right??
So decide what you will be known for. What will people come to you for, as opposed to someone else? What is your ‘super power’?
For example, let’s imagine you want to create an online fitness program. Those are a dime a dozen right!? So let’s dive deeper. Maybe you create fitness programs specifically for weight training. And deeper. Maybe you create these weight training programs for women post-pregnancy looking to build back some muscle mass. Oh, and you also provide easy, plant-based meal plans. So, you can start to understand just how deep you can go. And when you do this it becomes so much easier to connect with your perfect audience. You just get them, and they get you!
Validate your Idea
Okay once you’ve decided on your million dollar idea (yes believe it!!). Now it’s time to do a little tweaking, if necessary. While niching down is important as stated above, you want to make sure there is at least some sort of market out there.
Use Google Search
When in doubt, Google it! I’m sure you’ve noticed when you type something into Google it prompts an autofill to make your search more specific. You can get more niche ideas from this. If that doesn’t look too inspiring, hit enter, and check out what comes up on the first page. What are other people in your industry doing?
Use Pinterest Search
It’s no secret, I love Pinterest! While Pinterest is generally thought of as social media it should actually be considered a search engine. Not only can you find inspirational content but you can plan and organize it all in one place. So go wild, see what you can find. Pinterest Search also autofills their search bar- simply start entering a word related to your niche into Pinterest. This will prompt the most popular topics people are searching for within that niche.
Use Etsy Search
If you plan on selling handmade items then definitely check out Etsy to see what else is out there. Similar to Google and Pinterest, Etsy also will auto-populate their search bar with more specific words related to your niche.
Use Google Trends
Google Trends is an amazing resource that lets you discover how popular certain topics are on Google, based on searches over time. It will tell you relative search volume, compare keywords and tell you other related keywords.
A note on competition
Alway remember, no one can replicate the YOU in your business. This has been a game-changer for me- comparison really is the killer of joy. Pour yourself into your product/service and teach the world what you know through your own lens!
Lets add a little bit of woo
Because duh! Lol. If you’ve read this far I’m assuming you would love to create or level-up your dream business. My favourite crystal for focusing on your purpose and passion is definitely Smoky Quartz.

Smoky Quartz is a Root Chakra stone- the first of the 7 chakras. It’s all about building a strong foundation and sense of direction in your life (and in business!). Define your purpose and develop a strong sense of connection to it. A strong Root Chakra means you’re fearless, grounded and just going for it!

Once you’ve decided…
Now that you’ve decided WHAT you’re going to do, let’s figure out WHY you’re doing it. I’d highly recommend watching this inspiring Ted Talk with Simon Sinek!
People don’t buy what you sell, they buy why you sell it.
The first time I watched that video so much clicked! It just makes sense right? But it’s so simple. If you can start your business knowing your ‘why’, it will lead you down the path of least resistance, ie- everything won’t feel sooo hard. You will feel totally aligned and authentic in your purpose.
Here’s an example using The Beautiful Nomad:
